November 2007
Here's a tip from Carolyn Van Ness, RCGC Library Manager, Master Gardener, and retired science librarian.

Are the leaves falling off the houseplant you just brought in from the cold? This is a normal reaction to the sudden change in temperature and humidity.
Houseplants do best when the change is made gradually, bringing them in overnight and shortening their day for a week or two.
Inside, most plants are best in an east, west, or south window. Keep them cool, especially at night, and water only when dry.

Fall Clean-up Tip

When cutting back the dead stalks on your perennials, don't cut them all the way to the ground. Leave about 10-12" worth of the stalks sticking up to protect next spring's tender, tasty, new growth from hungry browsers. You can remove the dead stalks - or in this case, defense aids in the battle against hungry and curious wildlife - in the spring once your plants have reached a less edible size.
