0811SD Late Summer Dividing and Cuttings
Saturday, August 11
10 am-1 pm
Instructor Michael Hannen propagates all the plants that he grows for sale at his home-based nursery in Rochester's Upper-Monroe neighborhood. Join him at the nursery where he will share techniques honed through 20 years of trial and error regarding when, how, and where to propagate various types of plants. The heat of early August is the best time for taking cuttings of many plants that you’d like to propagate for next year – perennials, woodies, even tropicals and annuals. This season’s growth is in peak condition and will put out roots very quickly, to produce cuttings that have the best chances of success for overwintering in the garage or cold frame. Your soil mix is critical too, and Michael will cover the details. Despite the heat, August is also a good time to divide many perennials – many are going dormant now, but still findable, others have put on significant growth, and there is still time to re-establish before winter. Bring all your questions – nothing is off-limits with Michael. Bonus: get to see all the sunflowers and late-summer plants in their glory. Directions will be emailed (or mailed) before the class.
